The First Step, and Why It’s Smaller Than You Think

Pre-Planning a Funeral Without Paying Anything Starts at Your Kitchen Table

Writing down your final wishes and paying for them are two separate steps, so you can pre-plan a funeral without paying anything today. Here’s what the first step involves, what funding means if you choose it later, and a start small enough for this week.

What You Will Learn

  • Why pre-planning looks like one big decision when it’s really three smaller ones
  • How to write down your final wishes without paying anything
  • What funding does if you decide to take that step later
  • A first step you can take this week with one sheet of paper

If you’ve been meaning to write down your final wishes for years and haven’t yet, you’re in good company. Most of the people I sit down with have been carrying this one around for a long time. They know it matters. What holds them back is rarely the idea itself. It’s how big the first step looks from where they’re standing.

So here is what the first step actually involves, including how you can pre-plan a funeral without paying anything to start. It’s smaller than most people expect.

Why it looks bigger than it is

Most people picture pre-planning as one large decision: choose everything, pay for everything, sign, and live with it for good. Seen that way, of course it gets put off.

That picture bundles three separate things together: deciding what you want, paying for it, and committing to it. Each one is smaller on its own, and none of them has to happen on the same day.

Some families come to us having kept money in a box under the bed for years, waiting until they had the full amount before they would start. I understand the instinct. But writing down your final wishes doesn’t cost anything. Funding them is a separate step, and there are monthly options, so it doesn’t need a lump sum.

People also think it’s permanent. It isn’t. You can update your wishes when life changes. At fifty-five you might wonder whether you’ll want a smaller celebration in twenty years—or a bigger one, because you’ll be more popular by then. Either way, it can change. And if you move, the arrangement can move with you to another funeral home.

Can you pre-plan a funeral without paying anything?

Yes. Writing down your final wishes and paying for them are two different steps, and you can do the first without the second.

Writing them down means answering a handful of questions:

  • Would you prefer burial or cremation?
  • Would you like a service, a celebration of life, or something quieter?
  • Where would you like it to be?
  • Is there music, a reading, or a person you’d want involved?

You can do this on paper at your own kitchen table, or with a pre-planning specialist. A consultation with a Kinship specialist is free.

Once your wishes are written down, your family has what they most need: they know what you wanted.

If you decide to fund it later

Funding is the step that holds your arrangement in place. When you choose services with a funeral home and fund them, the prices of those services are held at today’s cost. That’s what makes the arrangement last until it’s needed.

You don’t need the full amount to do this. Most families pay monthly, and the amount comes from the services you chose, not from a number someone suggests. Whether and when to take this step is up to you.

Nothing here is permanent

Life changes, and your wishes are allowed to change with it. You can update your arrangement when your circumstances or your preferences shift. If you move, it can move with you. The first step doesn’t lock you into anything.

What the first step can look like this week

Start with Your Pre-Planning Guide. It’s free, and it walks you through the questions one at a time: burial or cremation, the kind of service you’d like, where it happens, and who you’d want involved. You can fill it in at your own pace and stop whenever you like.

If you’d rather start even smaller, take a sheet of paper and write three things:

  • Burial or cremation
  • A place that matters to you
  • One thing you’d want the people you love to hear

Put it somewhere your family would find it.

That’s a start. You don’t need to finish anything yet. When you’re ready, the rest can happen at your own pace.
